This past weekend was one of the hardest races if not the hardest race in the Southwest, the infamous Tour of the Gila! And your teammates went there and delivered. Our Pro-1/2 women team did an exceptional job, along with our Cat 2, Cat 3 and Cat 4 men. At the end of the day the team finished with a solid performance from Anna Sanders finishing 19th on GC, Ashley Koch 23rd and Cara Bussell 46th. Andre McNulty finished 26th on GC for the Cat 2 men. Elliot Anderson finished 21st on GC for the Cat 3 men. Ryan McGuigan finished 2nd on GC for the Cat 4,5 A along with Christian Maldonado who finished 13th on GC, Mike Montoya who finished 24th and Tim Gendler who finished 29th.

Representing in Arizona were Eric Preiss and Michael Radcliff. They were both getting some warm up for the TT series during the 3 Bears TT. Michael got 2nd place and Eric was tied to 3rd on the Cat 3s. Great job!

Congratulations to Christian Maldonado on his upgrade to Cat 3 and Matt Pobloske for his upgrade to Cat 2!

AZ State Crit Championships: Women's Pro 1/2 - Phoeniz AZ

Marilyn McDonald, Chloe Black, and Cara Bussell participated in the Arizona State Criterium Championships. The Cat 1, 2 women raced together, but were scored separately. There were just over 10 women in the field. The 3 Trisports Cycling / Eclipse Racing women attacked the field. McDonald was off the front (again) with 18 laps to go. The gap increased from the 10 second range to the 20 second range within a few laps. The field did not give up however. Judy Jenkins and Megan French among others put in valiant efforts to chase McDonald down. Black and Bussell worked hard to go with any fliers attempting to bridge the gap. In the end, for the Cat 1 women, McDonald took the win with Bussell coming in 2nd and Black in 3rd. Bussell and Black also left the crit with a handful of cash and gear from pack primes. It was a good day for the Trisports women!

Redlands Bicycle Classic: Stage 3 - Beaver Medical Group Sunset Road Race (68.1 miles) - Redlands, CA

This stage is the stuff of legends. A neutral start has the field, still around 100 strong, has the riders on edge, knowing the moment the neutral ends, all hell breaks loose. This year did not disappoint! After 9 laps and a field that literally shattered, Anna maintained a great position with the main field, slightly off pace with a breakaway group. Ashley finished in the next group, with Cara then Chloë finishing as strong as they could, even moving up a few GC positions before the day would end.

Anna Sanders - 26th (16th GC)
Ashley Koch - 47th (35th GC)
Cara Bussell - 55th (54th GC)
Chloe Black - 67th (67th GC)

And a huge thank you to Nancy Bruton for allowing our team to take over her home for a week and for being our biggest fan out there at the races! You guys ROCK!

Redlands Bicycle Classic: Stage 2 - City of Redlands Criterieum (60 minutes) - Redlands, CA

Nine corners, 1 hairpin, 112 women -Chloe & Cara love these kinds of races, but it was hard hour of racing! The entire city of Redlands, or so it appears, comes out for this event. In a race where positioning is everything, the women were hovering around the start line up to 30 min before the start. A bad spot through that first corner can mean the end of the race for a number of people. After 1 hr of non-stop speed, attacks, primes & time bonuses and avoiding several crashes, Cara, Anna, Ashley & Chloë all finished with the field. Unfortunately, Kristen, having been gapped early in the race, didn’t manage to make it back onto the field and just barely missed the time cut.

Anna Sanders - 45th
Cara Bussell - 61st
Chloe Black - 69th
Ashley Koch - 70th

Redlands Bicycle Classic: Stage 1 - City of Beaumont Circuit Road Race (72.3 miles) - Redlands, CA

Today’s race was fairly uneventful, but still much changed. TriSports arrived with a lot of positive energy to see what we had and discussed some ideas on how to best manage ourselves in such a large peleton. Criag left for the feed zone, as we were going to need it in the 90+ degree weather, with humidity, of course! Unfortunately, the first time up the climb saw a fairly large pile up which Kristen managed to avoid, but she lost contact with the pack and proceeded to time trial for the remaining 2.5 laps so as to not be time cut. Ashley & Anna finished with the pack, with Cara just off in the second group and Chloë in the third group. Kristen did, in fact, manage to finish within the time limit! An amazing effort. This evening had the entire TriSports crew hosted for dinner at Nancy’s sister and friends home. An absolutely wonderful evening with amazing food and laughter that will not soon be forgotten!

Ashley Koch - 14th
Anna Sanders - 25th
Cara Bussell - 43rd

Kristen, Cara & Chloë’s bikes weighed in at "too light". Our very reliable mechanic, director, manager, & soigneur, Craig, saved the day and managed to find tools that were just the right weight to rest our minds at ease. At the end of the day, Ashley ripped the prologue up finishing 14th place with Anna Sanders 18th, 2 seconds behind Ashley! Cara, Kristen & Chloë held their own in a very competitive field of 114 women. After the prologue, we simply rode back to the house and started to ready ourselves for the Stage 1, the Beaumont RR.

Redlands Bicycle Classic: Prologue Sun Time Trial (3.1 miles) - Redlands, CA
Ashley Koch - 14th
Anna Sanders - 19th

With Cara Bussell, Kristen Hetzel and Chloe Black putting in strong performances as well. Will make for exciting race tactics to come. On tap Friday is the City of Beaumont Circuit Road Race at 72.3 miles.

Registration! The team headed over the race head quarters to pick up packets and get a feel for the event. Great fun! Shortly after, we all discovered a locally recognized café with internet, Stell’s, which became our second home. After a good dose of facebook, email & caffine, we went out to pre-ride the courses. Or at least we tried. Some were harder to track than others, but we had the right idea. We were all a little worried about our bikes “making weight”, but mostly our minds were on the 3.1 miles of pain about to begin.

Team TriSports Cycling/Eclipse Racing departed for Redlands, CA for the 27th Annual Stage Race with a team of five, Cara Bussell, Ashley Koch, Anna Sanders, Kristen Hetzel & Chloë Black and Craig Bellmann as our Team Manager. Our team had received host housing from Redlands resident and cycling/running enthusiast, Nancy Bruton. The slightly epic 7+hr drive had Craig & Chloe arriving first and setting up Nancy’s garage as team headquarters for all of our gear!

Another great weekend full of racing for our team as some of our teammates took on the San Dimas Stage Race, the San Tan Crit and the Hungry Dog Criterium. Congratulations to Thomas Collins for winning the Master 30+ in the San Tan Criterium. Congratulations to Eric Preiss for his podium in the Cat 4s at the Hungry Dog Criterium.

Congratulations to Michael Radcliff for his upgrade to Cat 3!

Race Report: San Dimas Stage Race, San Dimas, CA (Juniors 15-16)

Tulio Weber winning the polka dots in San Dimas!

I was excited to race because all the top national riders registered, like Philip O’Donnell the national winner for my age group. Another thing that I was excited about was they had three jerseys competitions, the yellow jersey, the green jersey, and the polka dot jersey. I won the polka dot jersey which I was happy about because riders who are really good climbers were racing.

My results were good. In the T.T., I got 3rd place. My time trial time was better than I expected because I didn’t get to preview the course before the race. The road race was really confusing because the sprint laps and the K.O.M. laps were changed, but by the end of the road race, I got a placement of 5th place and 2nd in GC. The next day was the crit. I was pretty nervous about riding because it was raining, but everything went well. I got 6th place and finished in 3rd place in GC.

Despite all of the difficulties of the race, I won four medals, a polka dot jersey, 2 pairs of sock, and $50 in prize money. But the coolest thing was that I got flowers like the Pros, but no kisses! - Tulio Weber

Another amazing weekend of racing in the streets of our city, that was the Tucson Bicycle Classic. TriSports Cycling/Eclipse Racing showed dominance in the field with impressive results. Congratulations to Cara Bussell for taking the overall in the Pro 1/2 Women's field with Marilyn McDonald also on the podium in 3rd! Anna Sanders and Kristen Hetzel placed in the top ten final GC results. What a tremendous team effort by the women. Congratulations to Michael Radcliff for wining the overall in the Men's Cat 4 field!

Race Report: Tucson Bicycle Classic Prologue, Tucson, AZ (Women's Pro/1/2)

Recovering after the McCain Loop Prologue.

Ywaine Klix and Michael Stoner helped to start our weekend off right by coming out early to set up the tents and trainers. Chloe Black, Kristen Hetzel, Mimi Ford, Chrissy Parks, Anna Sanders, Marilyn McDonald, and Cara Bussell made up the Trisports Cycling / Eclipse Racing Womens Pro 1/2 field. Our team was able to warm up as a group which added to the cohesiveness, which was to continue to form over the weekend. The TT course starts on a slight downhill, turns to the right and then ascends up a small hill before coming to a steeper hill. After the race, McDonald and Bussell exchanged their experiences with the course. Bussell explained that she kept thinking that she was going to push too hard and bonk. McDonald had the exact opposite mind set during the race, believing that she may be going too easy. The results showed the truth. Indeed, McDonald had killed it and took a 3rd place podium finish. Hetzel also came in the top ten.

Cara in yellow after her win in the RR with the help of teammates.

Stage 1: Garrett Lemire Memorial Road Race (60 miles) - Sahuarita, AZ
This race consisted of 3 laps around a 20 mile loop, which consisted of a sustained climb, rollers, flats, and a decent. Ford showed the group that Trisports Cycling / Eclipse Racing were not going to make this an easy race by attacking when the group was less than 5 miles into the race. Two other women went with her. One, Lisa Turnbull, then did her own attack. Bussell bridged up to her and the two worked together to gain a significant lead on the pack. The Trisports women did a great job of chasing down and neutralizing any chase groups that began to form. Bussell rode away from Turnbull 20 miles into the race. Her intention was to work as hard and as long as she could for her team until the pack caught up to her. In the end, with the help of her teammates, she was able to solo the 40 miles to the finish line for a 1st place finish about 2 and a half minutes ahead 2nd place.. Sanders sprinted in for 4th and McDonald placed 5th.

Stage 2 - Carmichael Training Systems Circuit Race (39 miles) - Tucson, AZ
It was a chilly morning as the women took off to complete 7 laps of the 5.6 mile loop. The course had rolling hills, an uphill finish, and a sprint bonus at the start line on lap 3. The goal for the day was to keep Bussell in the yellow jersey and to move McDonald into 3rd place for the General Classification. Alisha Welsh from Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 Professional Women's Cycling Team was currently in 2nd place overall and began the race by attacking just after corner one. The women were caught a bit off guard, but reacted brilliantly to control the threat. Welsh, Gwen Ingles, and Melanie Colavito as well as a few others continued to put in hard attacks throughout the race. Each time, there was a strong Trisports woman there to go with the break. We knew that McDonald needed the time bonus on the 3rd lap to gain the 1 second needed on Stephanie Skoreyko. Black, Sanders, Hetzel, and Bussell formed a lead out train and she was able to put in a brilliant sprint to snag the needed bonus. The women continued to work exceptionally well together to execute the plan that Black had laid out for the team. On the final lap, Sanders chased down an early flier. With a few kilometers to go, she dropped the flier and powered in for a 1st place stage win. McDonald placed 6th with Black and Bussell coming in 9th and 10th respectively. Sanders moved up to 6th place overall and Hetzel placed 9th in the GC.

In the end, the team held onto the yellow jersey and came out with $605 in prize money, 2 stage wins and a podium and 4 top 10 places in the overall GC.

Special thanks to Nippy, Cindy Sanchez, and ALL the others who helped in the feed zone!! - Cara Bussell

Last weekend was a hard weekend of racing with Tumacacori on the schedule. Another year it proved to be the "hell of the south" with steep climbs, rough roads and lots of flat tires. We were able to pull off some good results though, with Peter Brown in 2nd place in the Masters 40+ and Cara Bussell, 3rd place in the Women's Pro field.

Race Report: Tumacacori CR, Rio Rico, AZ (Women's Pro/1/2)

The Tumacacori Circuit Race is held on a 6 mile course. The Cat 1/2/3 women raced around it 8 times for a total of 48 miles. Kristen Hetzel, Chloe Black, and Cara Bussell came to race. There were about 15-20 women making up the total field.

The course turns hilly quickly after the start line. The hills continue for about 3 miles before the course turns flatter with a couple of down hills and one short climb before the start/ finish. The pack stayed together on the first lap. Hetzel and Black both took pulls at the front. On the second lap, there was an attack on the hills and the pack split. 5 women were off the front. Black and Bussell worked together to gain some ground against the break. Eventually Bussell bridged up to the break and caught them right before the hills began again. There was another attack and 2 women went off the front. Bussell could see the pair for the entire 3rd lap, but couldn't catch them. After another set of hills, the pair was gone. She spent the next 36 miles in no-woman's land. The pair was no where in sight and she did not want to get caught by any efforts from the rest of the field. She finished in 3rd place. Black and Hetzel worked together and finished shortly thereafter. - Cara Bussell

We swept the podium on the Cat 3s with Elliot, Thomas and Matthew taking first second and third on an impressive race. Michael and Chris took 5th and 6th on the Cat 4 race. Great job to everybody who raced this weekend.

Race Report: UofA Crit, Tucson, AZ (Women's Pro/1/2)

Cara Bussell and Chloe Forsman in a break.

It was a cool spring day for today's U of A crit. This race was unique in offering such a large amount of prize money and it drew quite the crowd.

Chloe Black, Anna Sanders, and Cara Bussell came out to race for the Trisports Cycling / Eclipse Racing Team. Katheryn Bertine, Marilyn McDonald, and Chrissy Parks, showed up to cheer us on.

Anna Sanders attacking!

Now its Chloe's turn!

From the gun, Black and Bussell alternated in attacking the field. Eventually, Bussell got away with Chloe Forsman. The 2 worked together to keep a 15-25 second lead on the pack. Black and Sanders chased down any attacks from the pack. Sanders's legs were still feeling it from the 24 hour mountain bike race that she killed earlier in the week. Eventually, Jessi Prinner from the USA National Team U-23 bridged up to Bussell and Forsman. The 3 jockeyed for position on the final lap. The finish was extremely close with Prinner taking the win and Bussell coming in a close 2nd. Black won the field sprint to pin down 4th place. It was an incredibly fun day of racing! - Cara Bussell

Great weekend of racing for the TriSports Cycling/Eclipse Racing Team on VOS.  We had some strong performances and top 10 GC positions! Starting off with Kathryn Bertine who came  home with a solid 5th position GC on the Women PRO. Great performances by Marilyn McDonald, Anna Sanders who was 2nd place in the RR!, Kristen Hetzel, Chloe Black and Ashley Koch on the Women PRO field as well. Tulio Weber brought home a 6th spot on the Juniors 15 GC.  David Welsh had a hard race on the Cat 2 field. Great job by Matthew Pobloske, Christian Lopez, Kevin Harsley, Elliot Anderson and Thomas Collins on the Cat 3 field. Michael Radcliff landed a podium spot on the Cat 4 with a 2nd place in the TT and 2nd overall in the GC! Christian Maldonado came in 7th position on the GC for the Cat 4s. Strong performances by Alex Toussaint, Ryan McGuigan and Ywaine Klix. Ken Montaney represented the team on the Cat 5 field.

Race Report: Valley of the Sun Stage Race, Phoenix, AZ ( Women's Pro/1/2)
This weekend was the major opener for the TriSports Women's team at Valley of the Sun Stage Race in Phoenix, AZ. A few team mates have done some of the smaller local races, but this would be our first test against a stronger more race ready field. Representing our ladies were Kathryn Bertine, Chloe Black, Kristen Hetzel, Ashley Koch, Marilyn MacDonald and Anna Sanders. The first stage began on friday, the Buckeye Time Trial or "The Race of Truth". 42 women set out individually over the 14mile course. TriSports fastest time was set by Kathryn Bertine with 33:53. Marilyn MacDonald finished in 13th, Kristen Hetzel was 18th, Anna Sanders was 23, Chloe Black; 36th and Ashley Koch; 42nd (and Ashley raced heroically given she was not feeling well).

The 57 mile road race IN Casa Grande began fast and stay fast unlike in previous years. This made for a pleasantly surprising stage. All of the big teams raced hard and tactically savvy. TriSports was again part of the game. When not at or near the front, Anna Sanders was off the front. Anna had the best legs of day for our ladies and finished a strong 2nd place, just getting nipped at the line. Marilyn MacDonald finished 11th, Chloe Black 12th, Ashley Koch 16th, Kathryn Bertine 18th, Kristen Hetzel 21st.

The final stage, the Capital City Crit in downtown Phoenix, started with an interesting reason for a delay. There was a "Hay Delay". They were delayed as the hay bails needed to protect racers in the event of a crash, hadn't arrived on time! We arrived at the race venue to 45 min delay, but all was well as we started to set up trainers and fuel up for the final stage. As we tried to bring life back to our very tired legs, the mood on the team was strong and ready. The plan was simple; be at the front and cover everything. The race began predictably fast and pretty much stayed that way. TriSports was again, at the front, off the front or contesting prime sprints. In the end, Chloe Black was 6th, Anna Sanders 16th, Marilyn MacDonald 21st, Kristen Hetzel 24th, Kathryn Bertine 28th & Ashley Koch 32nd.

A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Justin Orkney for being the most awesome team player and helping out his ENTIRE team at VOS while on the mend from injury. Justin, your mere presence was a comfort to your team mates. Thank you! - Chloe Black

Final GC for TriSports Women:
Kathryn Bertine: 5th
Marilyn MacDonald: 11th
Anna Sanders: 14th
Kristen Hetzel: 16th
Chloe Black: 22nd
Ashley Koch: 25th

Race Report - Men's Category 4

Michael Radcliff on the podium!

Christian Maldonado, Ywaine Klix, Ryan McGuigan, Alex Toussaint and Michael Radcliff represented the Tri-Sports Cycling/ Eclipse Racing Club at the Category IV Valley of the Sun Stage Race over the weekend. We all agreed before the race to work for each other based on the Time Trial Results. I was fortunate to place second.

The Road Race started off slow. We were going to do 2 ½ laps on a 16 mile circuit. Ywaine & Ryan worked really hard at staying in front of me and keeping me out of trouble until we got to the first climb where we figured it would thin out. The pace went from 17 mph to 23 mph as we started up the hill. We crested and started down the back side. Christian immediately got in front of me and worked our way down the hill. As we started up the hill the second time, I knew something was badly wrong as I had no energy. I started moving backwards going from 3rd place to about 10th. About 2/3rds of the way up, Christian realized I was in trouble and came around me. I remember him saying "Get on my wheel and I will get you through this!" I jumped on and hung on as he gave me everything he had pulling us back up to the leaders. At this point, the group split with about 5 guys in front of us going down the back side. Another rider went by us and I jumped on his wheel and Christian jumped on mine. We caught the leading 5 and became 10. Tri-sports was well represented by Alex, Christian and myself. I hung onto the back and of the group trying to recover as Christian and Alex began working with the other guys in the break to try to grow the lead. We made it to the last climb and I finished 10th on the day.

We finished with two riders in the top 10 and three riders in the top 25. Because of my teammates sacrifice I was able to finish second overall. - Michael Radcliff

Manhattan Beach Grand Prix: Manhattan Beach, CA  06/29/10

Victor Riquelme makes the break!  This is the final corner before start/finish line.

Sunday June 29th was the Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix, a National Racing Calendar criterium in Southern California. Each lap was just under 2 kilometers long, with a short climb after the start/finish, followed by an uphill 180 degree corner. A couple of rollers on the back side of the course lead to a downhill 180 degree corner, which was 250 meters from the start/finish. The Pro/1 race was 80 minutes long.

The race started out fast. I wanted to stay near the front, there was a crosswind on the back side of the course and I figured it would force splits in the peloton. Surely enough, in the 2nd lap a group of around 15 riders had a small gap on the rollers. I bridged accross, and when I got there I attacked immediately to see if anyone would come. A group of 10 of us got away from the main field, including representatives from most of the major teams in the race. Notable were Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V Australia), William Dickeson (Jelly Belly), Thurlow Rogers (Amgen-Ubs Elite Masters) and Yosvany Falcon(Bahati Foundation). We worked hard, and quickly had a 30 second gap.

Falcon(Bahati Foundation) had the race favorite and 3 time Manhattan Beach champion Rahsaan Bahati in the peloton, and so was not contributing much to the break. Sulzberger (Flying V), Rogers(Amgen), and Dickeson (Jelly Belly) all also had good sprinters in the peloton, but were working knowing that Bahati and United Healthcare were commited to the chase behind. Around 10 laps in on a prime lap I took the final corner too hot and ended up on the ground. I had to get a wheel change but was let back into the race in the break, which was hanging onto a 30 second lead.

There wasn't enough firepower in the peloton willing to chase down the break, and our lead was soon over a minute. With such a large lead we were able to settle into a steady rythm, but the peloton was still looming behing us. For the last 30 minutes of the race the main field started to chase in earnest, but the pressure was turned on in the break as well. I felt alright considering I had slid for around 15 feet on my backside, and tried to do my share of the work. Everyone was struggling, but we were able to keep the speed up and eventually even Falcon(Bahati Foundation) was working into the rotation. Coming into the final 5 laps our lead had diminished, but we were still hanging on to around 40 seconds.

The peloton could not make the catch, and we came into the final kilometers with enough time to forget about driving and think about each other instead. I made the decision to play a defensive role, and save my energy for the last 200 meters. I followed the attacks but ended up too far back coming into the final corner, and wasn't able to get up in the sprint. Yosvany Falcon(Bahati Foundation) took the win with Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) in 2nd and Diego Yepez (Bike Religion) in 3rd. I paid for my bad positioning and finished 7th. Jake Keough (United Healthcare/Maxxis) won the bunch sprint out of the peloton. - Victor Riquelme

SingleTrack Omnium: Flagstaff, AZ  06/12 & 06/13/10

Justin Orkney won the crit this past weekend!!
Chrissy was tearing it up in the RR out there too!! Ouch those girls are strong!
Marco did great with a 2nd place in the RR
Billy grabbed 3rd & 5th respectively in the CR and RR
Eric took 8th in the omnium GC

Here is a race report from from the men's pro race:

"We sent Peter Brown, Justin Orkney, and Victor Riquelme to Flagstaff this weekend for the Single Track Omnium, which included a mass start Hillclimb on Saturday morning, a flat Circuit Race the same evening, and a grueling local classic, the Wupatki Road Race, on Sunday.

The Snow Bowl Hillclimb opened up the weekend, with 2000 feet of vertical gain over 6.5 miles and temperatures in the 30's at the start line. The race proved selective, with David Glick(Rideclean) and retired local legend Drew Miller(unattached) going clear of the field and fighting for the top spots on the podium. Glick took the victory, and an early lead in the omnium.

The evening Foxboro Ranch Circuit Race was a flat course, with 4 corners and 2 wooden bridge crossings in each of fifteen 1.8 mile laps. Peter Brown(Trisports/Eclipse) attacked off of the start line, launching himself onto a solo breakaway that lasted until midway through the race. After another flurry of attacks Peter was off the front again, but again the peloton brought him back in.

As Peter was caught Justin Orkney(Trisports/Eclipse) launched himself off the front of the main field, and was quickly joined by Jesse Robles(Bicycle Haus), Cody Hall(Bicycle Haus), and Rafe Allen(Vegas Velo). The peloton could not bring them back, and Justin used the technical nature of the finish to attack his breakaway companions with 500 meters to go. He came across the line in first, in what was a very close finish.

The battle was on for omnium points behind. Drew Miller (unattached), JR Grabinger(Pista Palace), and David Glick(Rideclean), came unglued from the front of the peloton during last lap of the race, with Glick winning that fight for 4th and maintaining his lead in the omnium.

Sunday had the Wupatki Road Race in store, with 72 miles of customary crosswinds and an uphill finish after over 2,000 feet of climbing in the final 20 miles. An early break formed in the first 10 miles, with 3 riders - Justin Orkney(Trisports/Eclipse), Eric Salstrand(Bicycle Haus), and a currently unidentified rider(sorry).

Peter Brown and Victor Riquelme began to put pressure on the peloton in the crosswinds and rollers, and with 20 miles remaining in the race Victor Riquelme was solo in no-mans land attempting to cross the 3 minute gap to the leading breakaway. On the climb up Sunset Crater towards the finish he passed the shattered remnants of the leading group, and was riding solo to the finish in 2nd, with Eric Salstrand (the lone survivor from the early break) still up the road and leading the race.

Just half a mile from the top of the climb Riquelme was caught by Drew Miller(unattached) and David Glick(Rideclean), who were once again shadowboxing for the omnium. He couldn't hold on to their pace, and was relegated to sprint for 4th after dropping and being caught by a small chasing group containing JR Grabinger(Pista Palace) and Travis Waldron(Bicycle Haus). Eric Salstrand(Bicycle Haus) stayed away after spending all day off the front and won the race, with David Glick securing the omnium by beating Drew Miller in the sprint for 2nd."

Tumacacori RR: Tucson, AZ  03/28/10

The winds picked up as the morning progressed. Luckily, the Women's Cat 4 riders started around 07:20 in the first wave. There was a small group of entrants but the pace was fast and gals were getting dropped on the first lap. Beth Utley and Bora Leonard from Sierra Vista broke away from the remainder of the field on the 2nd lap working together through the 3rd lap. On the final lap, Beth picked up the pace over the hills riding in solo for another TriSports Cycling victory. The course is tough and is sometimes referred to as the race of attrition because of the steep ascents that eventually take their toll on the legs. Great finish Beth!

Tucson Bicycle Classic: Anklam Circuit Race Stage 3  03/14/10

Victor Riquelme takes the Circuit Race win over the yellow jersey wearer, Dave Swanson.
Photo Courtesy of Mason Ibas Photography

I came into the last day of racing 5 seconds out of the yellow jersey with 3 strong teammates (Jeff Parker, Peter Brown, and Jimmy Riccitello). We had high hopes for taking those seconds away from the race leader (Dave Swanson), who was without a team. The course on the final stage was 8 laps of a 6 mile circuit with a good amount of climbing, a lot of wind, and an uphill finish. Finish line bonuses were awarded for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers (10, 6, and 4 seconds, respectively). Jeff spent all day mixing it up on the front of the peloton while Peter and Jimmy took turns attacking, putting a lot pressure on the yellow jersey.

In the final lap of the race Jimmy got away with a Bicycle Haus rider, forcing Swanson to chase one last time to try and bring the race back together. The catch was made inside of the last kilometer, and I was sitting in around 15th place as we started the drag up to the finish. I was on the right side of the peloton, which was bad because there was a strong crosswind and I had no shelter. But, with around 600 meters to go a solo attack came off to the left of the main field. I spotted it, dove into the wind and found a sweet spot on his wheel. I stayed there until 200 meters to go, realized that I could wait no longer, and opened up the sprint. Nobody could come around, and I won the stage.

In an impressive show of strength the yellow jersey finished 2nd in the stage, so with the time bonuses Dave Swanson hung on to his GC lead by a slim 1 second margin. We did what we planned to do, and executed very well as a team, but in a bunch finish like that you can only push your body as hard is it can be pushed, and hope for the best. - Victor Riquelme

Other notable finishes include Anna Sanders, Cara Bussell and Kathryn Bertine: 6th, 7th and 9th respectively for Pro Cat 1-2 Women, Chrissy Parks: 6th Cat 3 Women, Erin Borg: 2nd, Beth Utley: 4th Women’s Cat 4, Justin Orkney and Andre McNulty: 3rd and 4th respectively Cat 3 Men, Brynn Dietz and Ken Montaney: 6th and 7th respectively Cat 5 B Men. Many others raced – great job to all!

Boulevard Road Race  02/06/10 Boulevard, CA:

Andre McNulty, 12th in Cat 3 Boulevard RR

Andre McNulty, Marco Menchaca, and Eric Preiss raced in California in February representing Trisports Cycling / Eclipse Racing with some great results early in the season and despite some bad weather.

There was a lot of rain and temperatures were cold. That made the race even harder. Our road race consisted of 2 laps on a 22 mile loop, that was half downhill and half uphill with just a few flats.

There were 100 riders registered in both the Cat 4 and 5 races, but with the rain,  I think the total that actually showed for the race was less. Both races were very similar in that a small group went hard on the climb of the first lap splitting the peloton.

In the Cat 4 race, there were 8 of us that took off. The second lap was focused on working together to maintain the gap but it was difficult to keep up the work for a long time because everyone wanted to be fresh for the final climb. We arrived to the climb with one guy that attacked earlier forming a small gap.  From there it was just a matter of keeping the pace hard with a couple of attacks.
- Marco Menchaca

In the Cat 5 race, the field split during the main climb and the lead group shrunk to 10 by the start of the 2nd lap. There was a solo breakaway that stayed away until the final climb. As we caught him, the pace increased and riders started to drop off the back. There were only 5 of us with 1km to go. An attack by one rider was quickly countered and those two took the first two spots. - Eric Preiss

Andre McNulty - 12th Place, Cat 3
Marco Menchaca - 3rd Place, Cat 4
Eric Preiss - 5th Place, Cat 5

Valley of the Sun - Road Race  02/13/10 Phoenix, AZ:

The race started off calm enough. We had 5 1/2 laps on what was a 16 mile circuit. An early break got away but they were reeled in by the second lap - just in time for the first intermediate sprint. I contested it, but went too early after I mistook the 200 meter sign for the finish. I still managed to finish 3rd in that sprint, and picked up a 1 second GC time bonus. I paid for the 400 meter effort for about a lap and a half....I did not feel very good at all. Another break got away, but they were reeled in just in time for the second intermediate sprint. I could see where this was all going....

With 1 lap to go there was a 2 man breakaway off the front. They had been out there for a while already (ever since the second intermediate sprint) and had built up a 1 minute and 40 second lead. The last lap was excruciatingly painful as Bicycle Haus team put us all in the gutter for 30 minutes and pulled the race back together. I was seriously hanging onto the back the whole time trying not to get popped off. It was very fast!

Closing in on the finish I found Peter, and told him I felt good enough to win. He started to tow me up through the peloton, but I lost contact with him. On the final climb there were a lot of tired bodies, and gaps were opening up in the group. I was easily able to move to the front. I found Peter, got on his wheel, and let him know I was there. With the finish in sight he dragged me up into the top 10 places. I found a spot that I liked and got into it. He went to the front of the bunch and rode as hard as he could. I waited for the 200 meter sign and started my sprint from around 7th place. I went by everyone, and never saw any of them again.
- Victor Riquelme

Like the women, the Trisports Cycling/Eclipse racing men have started the season on a strong note!

UofA Crit  01/30/10 Tucson, AZ:

Nice work! Chloë Black and Cara Bussell

Under partly cloudy skies at the U of A, the 2010 season began for the TriSports Cycling/Eclipse Racing women in Tucson, AZ. On their home turf, Cara Bussell and Chloë Black came out ready to race. Although the field was small, the race was aggressive from the gun. After a number of attacks and counter attacks, Cara solidified a break with Specialized rider, Chloe Forsman. With teammates in the group, these two quickly broadened their gap. A number of field primes were won by Chloë Black as Cara kept pushing the break while also winning a prime. On the final lap, Bussell and Forsman lapped the field and finished seconds ahead of the pack. Cara was nipped on the line and ended up in 2nd place with Black winning the field sprint to clinch the final podium spot.

This was a promising debut for the 2010 season with some effective team work. TriSports Cycling women are definitely going to be a great example of team racing in Arizona and across the nation!
